Roll Profiling
Tell Us About Your Application

Customer Requirements
The customer manufacturers rolls used for printing applications. The OD and the TIR are very critical to the printing process and these values must be checked after manufacturing. The results of inspection are saved in a database and formatted into a report sent to the customer.

Currently the measurements were done manually and adding a substantial amount of skilled labor cost to each roll.

The customer asked MetriLogic to come up with a solution that could reduce the operator's inspection time and the time clerical staff used to make up customer reports.

The system had to be simple and operator friendly. It also had to be at least as accurate as manual measurement.

Solution
A software solution was designed to : Measure the OD and the TIR measurements at high speeds using the Beta/Lasermike 550 scanner and Intellipak. A platform was built using a precision lead screw and a high resolution servo motor. The product remained stationary and the LaserMike moved smoothly across it to measure the diameter continuously.

The payback on the system is a substantial reduction in manual labor and increase in measurement time. A total manual task is now almost fully automatic. The accuracy of the system is increased and the measurement randomness of human measurements has been removed. A customer ready report is made without any additional effort.

• Measurement Screen displaying the results of the the measurement pass
• Printed reports with drawing ready for the customer.
• Simple Operation

Measurement Screen displaying the results of the the measurement pass

Most important is that the solution is simple for the operator

1) Insert the roll
2) Select the roll type from the menu. The menu holds the critical dimensions and limits for go/no-go.
3) Press the "measure" button.

The laser scans over the entire roll an compares it to the preset limits and locations. It is accurate to .001 on length and .0001 diameter. At the end of the measurement pass a drawing of the roll is displayed wit the profile dimensions for diameter, length and angularity displayed.

4)
The operator then moved to the TIR screen.

The TIR positions were preset and the system positions the part precisely at the positions requires and the cues the operator to manually rotate the part. TIR is measured as the product is moved. (a motor rotating the part can do this automatically. ) After the measurements are taken at each position the operator switches the the report page and produces a printed report. The data also goes to a database for later retrieval.

All of the calibration and other configuration is done within the application
